HISTORY
Walltown has provided valuable arts and enrichment activities to Durham youth since its inception, October 6, 2000. Walltown Children's Theatre has an exemplary record of supporting our young people through community performances and arts classes, artistic expression, and academic assistance through tutoring. Founding Executive/Artistic Director, Cynthia Penn, a professor in the Drama School at the prestigious UNC School of the Arts, has created workshops and programming for youth that focuses on the techniques and discipline required in professional arts training and real-world problem solving. This model of training and her expertise has enthused WCT programming for over ten years. We build confidence in youth to succeed in all areas of their lives through the careful application of classical training coupled with original productions that enhance the lives of today’s youth. It is a fundamental part of our mission. Every child has the ability to succeed when valued. WCT inspires hope and perseverance using the arts as a tool to develop their character. We have partnered with city and local agencies, universities, community development organizations, and churches to identify and meet the needs of families that are not able to afford instruction. As a ‘need-blind’ organization, we have always promoted inclusion of all children, regardless of their financial means.
