Walltown Dance Company is an exciting young repertory dance company with unique choreography and elements of styles of genres such as Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Contemporary Dance! WCT Founding Artistic Director Cynthia Penn Halal is a former Alvin Ailey dancer, and taught dance at University NC School of the Arts until her retirement to build Walltown's dance program full time. Company Director Grace Underwood is a graduate of UNC Charlotte with a minor in dance and a long history of performance and competing. In addition to the works by our directors and staff, we also commission works from guest choreographers for our Company performances and competition pieces.
Since the 2005 founding of Walltown's Dance Company, WCT provided opportunities for young dancers to rise to a level of high expectations, exceptional training and unique performance opportunities that teach them about the craft of dance and what is required of a career in the dance field. As part of a pre-professional dance ensemble, all company members gain a sense of the commitment, dedication, training and professionalism that are requirements of professional dancers. COMMITMENT TO SERVICE Walltown feels it is important that students be actively engaged in service to the community. Not only do company members gain valuable professional experience, but they consistently share their love of dance with their families, peers and the larger community; a true gift. Walltown seeks opportunities to partner with like-minded organizations, and performs in their events when feasible. Even off the dance floor, WCT dancers participate in a myriad of community events both individually and collectively in small and large groups. Walltown continues to shine the spotlight on our dancers as they give generously of their time and talent. COMPETITIONS Dance competitions can offer several benefits, such as the opportunity to showcase your skills, gain performance experience, receive feedback from judges, and connect with other dancers and professionals in the industry. Competitions can also provide motivation to improve your technique and push yourself to new levels. Additionally, some competitions offer scholarships or other opportunities for dancers to further their education or career. At Walltown, we value the exposure and experience our dancers have when attending competitions and their corresponding trainings. To ensure all of our dancers can benefit, WCT coordinates fundraising efforts during the year to pay for the production pieces entered in the competitions. Dancers who are able, can additionally choose to compete in solos, duets, trios and small groups. |
